Team SurveyCTO is committed to empowering our users to excel in data collection through principle-driven innovation in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
First, we began with a large-language model (LLM): The SurveyCTO AI Assistant, a chatbot designed to support SurveyCTO users and trained on our product documentation, website, and Support Center articles.
Then, we created AI form tools, an AI innovation to provide detailed form and question reviews and assist in coding constraint and relevance expressions—two key components of survey design. The public preview version of the AI form tools lived on our website and could be interacted with by uploading spreadsheet versions of form definitions. This provided a certain level of benefit, but also required users to export their forms into a spreadsheet and upload them to the form tools, taking them out of the flow of designing the form within their server console on the SurveyCTO platform.
We are delighted to announce that after extensive testing, we have upgraded the AI features available to users! Both the AI form tools as well as AI Assistant are now available to be used within your SurveyCTO server.

How to use the AI form tools in the SurveyCTO platform
Integrating the AI form tools into the SurveyCTO platform eliminates the need to upload your form for question reviews or to get expression coding assistance.
Tip: In addition to getting help with relevance and constraint expressions, the AI form tools can also help generate calculate expressions. Together, these expression types are important aspects of effective and optimal survey design—and now these embedded tools make it incredibly easy to create better surveys!
Instead, you can simply use the online form designer within the Design tab of your server console to create a form, and the AI form tools will be available for you as options. This means that you can now get help with writing survey questions that adhere to best practices, and with creating expressions to program the exact forms you need—no matter what your skill level with building surveys is.
Getting started is straightforward
- Create a form in the online form designer or open a created form in the online form designer. For each form field you will see a blue wand icon to Conduct AI review:
- Next, click the Conduct AI review to get a detailed AI analysis of the question, complete with a review, a rating, and detailed recommendations for different phrasing or coding.
- AI form tools are also located within each field to help you when adding relevance or constraint expressions through natural-language prompts, like this:
- Then, you can review the AI suggestion and determine if you want to use it or update your prompt and generate a new expression.
How to use the AI Assistant in the SurveyCTO platform
In addition to the incorporation of AI form tools, the SurveyCTO AI Assistant has also been added to the online form designer.
You can continue to engage with the AI Assistant as you have been (for example, in bottom right-hand corner of our website), but the Assistant being added to the online form designer means that it now has context about your form definition when interacted with in your server console.
This allows for more succinct questions and less need to explain yourself when interacting with the AI Assistant.
How to access these AI features
All SurveyCTO users today, regardless of their subscription, can take advantage of these embedded AI features to facilitate the survey design process. This feature availability may change in the future so make sure to give them a try today!
In order to access these features, users will need to be on platform version 2.82. For existing users, updating your platform version can be done by navigating to the Manage Subscription section in your account. New users will automatically be on the latest version.
Data privacy and security when using SurveyCTO AI features
At SurveyCTO, data security is a core principle, and we’re incorporating best-in-class security into our platform-integrated AI tools.
Rest assured: SurveyCTO does not use your data to train our AI models.
With our AI form tools, we only have access to the data you explicitly share when using AI form tool features. This means that, for example, if you request help with expression coding, we would only be able to see your form definition because it is necessary to provide expression coding help. However, we would not use your engagement with the AI tools to otherwise train our models.
With our AI Assistant, when engaging with it outside of the online form designer, (e.g. on our website), we also only have access to the data you share within the conversation. When engaging with the Assistant within the online form designer, it will have access to your form definition to be able to provide contextually-aware support.
With both AI tools, we do not have any access to sensitive or personally identifiable information, form responses, or your organization’s information.
