You are currently viewing Webinar: How HiiL uses data innovation to spark change in the justice system

HiiL deployed a multi-wave survey via social media to measure justice needs in Uganda. Learn how they did it in this webinar.

Compared to sectors like education, healthcare, or infrastructure, the field of law and justice has historically had much less of a data-driven decision-making culture. “Many public decisions are made based on practice, habits, or even just a hunch,” says Dr. Martin Gramatikov, Director, Measuring Justice at HiiL.

That’s starting to change though, and The Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL), a social enterprise devoted to user-friendly justice, is one of the leaders. On February 2, 2022, we’ll host a webinar with Dr. Gramatikov to learn how HiiL used SurveyCTO in a multi-wave survey via social media in Uganda in 2021. We’ll cover how HiiL measures justice globally and how this kind of data is driving change in Uganda.

HiiL is dedicated to user-friendly justice, which means justice is easy to access, easy to understand, and effective. They also seek to measure how legal problems are being resolved on an everyday basis.

In 2021, HiiL carried out a multi-wave survey in Uganda to measure the prevalence of legal problems and understand people’s experiences with access to justice. Along the way, they learned a lot about collecting data through social media in multiple waves. In this webinar, Dr. Gramatikov will share his knowledge and the lessons HiiL learned from the project.

Join us live on February 2 to learn about what it takes to measure justice

When you join us for the webinar, you’ll hear how HiiL used specific SurveyCTO features to gather data on social media during COVID-19 lockdowns in Uganda.

They’ll share:

  • How they migrated from paper-based to online surveys
  • What tools helped HiiL carry out multi-wave surveys
  • How dashboards and reports help the team communicate their findings to stakeholders and instigate change
  • How they’re using that data to drive policy reform in the justice field
